Holiday Sporting Activities in Madeira
Madeira is not commonly thought of as a holiday
destination that offers much in the way of sporting
activities. For some reason the thought of a holiday
to Madeira conjures up in many of our minds, a
holiday best suited for grown up, possibility
retiring couples looking for a lower paced holiday.
When in fact this isn’t entirely the case;
although Madeira does offer a peaceful slower
paced holiday destination, it also caters for
the more active and physical amongst us, especially
those into the more extreme sports.
Climbing is available on some of Madeira’s
rugged volcanic mountainous terrain. Madeira’s
geography provides some challenging climbing whether
it be taking on some of the cliff faces on the
coast or battling to the top of some of the peaks
of the central mountain range.
Other sporting pursuits include golf on one of
the two courses on the island, fishing and surfing
on the coasts and beneath the waves a rich and
nature world lies for keen divers to explore.
Capital City of Madeira
The capital of Madeira is Funchal situated on
the south east of the island. With its nature
labour and large port the capital is probably
the most tuned up area of Funchal for tourism
and receives a slightly warmer climate than other
parts of Madeira. The geography of Funchal is
interesting forming a natural amphitheatre around
its self as the land slopes gently up to over
1000 meters from the sea. In the city you will
find lovely cobbled street and the finest fresh
fish restaurants over looking the bay. For a great
view of the bay, take the cable car that starts
from the old part of the city
